For this installment of the Vegan Entertaining posts, I’m featuring Queenie’s 10th birthday party, which occurred two years ago at our home in Venice, California. Because her birthday is only a few days before Halloween, she opted to have a costume party. The theme of her choosing was snakes. Yes, snakes. There were snakes on the invitations, and snakes on the cakes. We went with two home-made bundt cakes, with both recipes from Veganomicon (do you own this book yet??). One is the Lemon-Coconut cake and the other is the Deep Chocolate.
Close-up of the snake fun:
Queenie even dressed as a snake, a Queen Cobra, to be exact.
Queenie made a couple of her signature dishes, including her agave-sweetened lemonade and the cinnamon apples with peanut butter dip.
The party was a lunch, and I served the Roasted Eggplant and Spinach Muffuletta Sandwich, also from Veganomicon, Tofurky hot dogs, potato chips, a green salad and a fruit salad. I don’t have any food shots – it went before I snapped any! But here are some happy diners.
Queenie very much enjoys sleight-of-hand, close-up magic, and she requested that a magician appear (magically, of course) at her party. After a bit of research, I found the perfect person: Joe Skilton. If you are anywhere in Southern California and need a magician for your event, look no further! Joe absolutely blew our minds. Adults and children alike were amazed and delighted. On top of his talent, he is also a genuinely lovely person and a delight to have in your space. I obviously cannot recommend him highly enough. http://www.joeskilton.com/
(sorry the above shot is blurry – I was too busy trying to pick my jaw off the floor to focus the camera.)
Next it was time for presents and general merriment.
Bottom line: costume parties are fun!!
